As a chiropractor with a special interest in supporting children, I often talk to families about the fascinating connection between gut health and the brain. While research in this area is ongoing, evidence suggests that a child’s nutrition, digestive health, and nervous system are closely linked, and that supporting these areas can have a positive impact on their overall wellbeing.
Two Nervous Systems Working Together
The body has two interconnected nervous systems:
The central nervous system (CNS): the brain and spinal cord, which control most functions of the body and mind.
The enteric nervous system (ENS): the network of nerves in the gut, sometimes referred to as the “second brain” because of its complex communication with the brain.
These systems communicate through the vagus nerve, and interestingly, a large portion of this communication flows from the gut to the brain.
The Role of the Gut in Health
The gut is home to a large number of neurons and trillions of bacteria (the microbiome). This microbiome plays an important role in digestion, immune function, and producing certain neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine. Maintaining a healthy and balanced gut environment is linked with:
Supporting digestion and nutrient absorption
Healthy immune system function
General wellbeing
While studies are ongoing, research shows that factors such as diet, stress, and lifestyle can influence the balance of gut bacteria and overall gut health, which may in turn influence mood, behaviour, and energy levels.
