As the weather cools down across Sydney, we start seeing a very familiar pattern in practice.
People become run down.
Families start passing bugs around.
Parents are exhausted.
Kids are coughing through the night.
People’s necks tighten, headaches increase, sinuses block up, old injuries flare, and energy levels seem to crash.
And one thing I hear surprisingly often this time of year is:
“I wasn’t sure if I should come in because I’m sick… I didn’t want to spread germs or upset you guys.”
Honestly?
Please don’t stress about that.
If you are comfortable coming in, we are generally very comfortable seeing you.
In fact, winter is often one of the BEST times to get adjusted.
At Chiropractic Care, we regularly support people through the colder months — not because chiropractic “cures” colds or flu, but because many people report feeling more regulated, more mobile, less congested, less tense, and better able to cope physically during this time.
Our goal is to support your body, nervous system, movement, breathing mechanics, stress levels, recovery capacity, and overall wellbeing while your body does what it was designed to do: adapt and heal.
Why Winter Seems To Hit So Hard
Winter is rarely just “a cold.”
For many people, it becomes a perfect storm of stressors affecting the entire body.
During the colder months we commonly see:
- Increased viral illnesses
- Higher stress levels
- Poorer sleep
- Less movement and exercise
- More time indoors
- Reduced sunlight exposure
- Tight muscles and joints
- Sinus congestion
- Increased headaches and migraines
- Rib and chest tightness from coughing
- Jaw tension and TMJ flare-ups
- Increased fatigue and burnout
And for parents especially, winter can feel relentless. One child gets sick… then another… then mum and dad go down… then nobody sleeps properly for 2 weeks.
We often see families come into practice saying things like:
“We’ve all just been stuck in survival mode.”
The Nervous System & Winter Stress
One of the biggest things we focus on in chiropractic care is the nervous system.
Your nervous system helps coordinate and regulate virtually every process in the body — including breathing, muscle tension, sleep quality, stress responses, digestion, immune function, and recovery.
When people are stressed, exhausted, inflamed, in pain, or not moving well, the body can shift into a more defensive or “fight-or-flight” state.
This does not mean chiropractic “boosts immunity” in a magical way. However, there is growing research exploring the relationship between stress, the nervous system, and immune function. Chronic stress has been associated with altered immune responses and reduced recovery capacity.
Many patients tell us they feel calmer, sleep better, breathe easier, and recover better physically after care during stressful periods — especially during winter.
And clinically, this is something we observe often.
What We Commonly See In Practice During Winter
At our Gregory Hills Centre, winter tends to bring in several common patterns.
1. Tight Necks, Headaches & Sinus Pressure
When people become congested, they often breathe differently.
They mouth breathe more, their upper neck tightens, their jaw clenches, their shoulders elevate, and their posture collapses forward.
This can contribute to:
- Headaches
- Neck pain
- Jaw pain
- Facial pressure
- Tension around the eyes
- Upper back tightness
Many people are surprised to learn how interconnected the jaw, neck, ribs, posture, breathing muscles, and sinuses can be.
At Chiropractic Care, we commonly use a combination of:
- Gentle chiropractic adjustments
- TMJ/jaw assessment
- Soft tissue work
- Cranial techniques
- Rib mobility work
- Postural support
- Breathing and movement advice
Many patients report feeling “lighter,” “more open,” or able to breathe more comfortably afterwards.
2. Rib & Mid-Back Pain From Coughing
One of the biggest winter complaints we see is rib and mid-back pain after prolonged coughing.
People often come in saying:
- “I think I pulled something coughing.”
- “My ribs feel stuck.”
- “It hurts to breathe deeply.”
- “I can’t turn properly.”
Persistent coughing can place enormous strain on:
- Rib joints
- Intercostal muscles
- Thoracic spine
- Diaphragm
- Neck muscles
This is particularly common in parents carrying children while sick, desk workers, elderly patients and people already prone to spinal stiffness.
Gentle chiropractic care, mobility work, massage therapy, and breathing support can often help people move more comfortably while recovering.
3. Increased TMJ & Jaw Tension
Winter stress often shows up in the jaw.
When people are stressed, sick, sleeping poorly, mouth breathing, and congested, they frequently clench more.
At our Gregory Hills clinic, we commonly see winter flare-ups of:
- Jaw pain
- Clicking
- Tension headaches
- Ear pressure
- Facial tightness
- Neck pain
Dr Maria and Dr Alwyn in particular has a strong interest in TMJ dysfunction and we often find that addressing jaw mechanics alongside neck posture and muscle tension can be very helpful for patients experiencing these symptoms.
4. Exhaustion & Nervous System Overload
This is probably one of the biggest things we see during winter. People are simply overwhelmed.
Parents especially are often not sleeping, caring for sick children, working while exhausted, running on caffeine, missing exercise, and carrying stress physically.
Many people don’t realise how much physical tension stress can create in the body.
We frequently see:
- Tight shoulders
- Shallow breathing
- Jaw clenching
- Digestive changes
- Increased pain sensitivity
- Headaches
- Fatigue
For some people, simply taking time to slow down, breathe, receive care, and reconnect with their body can feel incredibly restorative.
But Is It Actually Safe To Come In Sick?
This is probably the biggest question people silently ask themselves.
And the answer is:
If you are well enough and comfortable enough to attend, we are generally very happy to support you.
Of course:
- If you have a highly contagious illness and are extremely unwell, sometimes resting at home is more appropriate.
- If you have a fever, severe symptoms, or medical concerns, it is important to speak with your GP or seek appropriate medical care.
- We also appreciate common courtesy measures such as hand hygiene and consideration for others.
But many people with mild-to-moderate cold symptoms can still safely attend appointments if they choose to.
In fact, many patients specifically book in because they:
- Feel congested
- Cannot move properly
- Are getting headaches
- Feel rib pain from coughing
- Want support while run down
And honestly, we would much rather help support you through it than have you suffer unnecessarily at home worrying what we think.
What Does The Research Say?
This is an important conversation because it deserves honesty, balance, and evidence-informed discussion.
Chiropractic care should not be promoted as a cure or treatment for viral infections such as colds or influenza.
However, research has explored several broader health factors that may influence how people feel and function during periods of stress, illness, and recovery.
These include:
- The relationship between stress and immune function
- The impact of sleep on recovery and wellbeing
- The effects of persistent pain and tension on quality of life
- The interaction between the nervous system and immune system
- How manual therapies may influence pain, mobility, relaxation, and perceived wellbeing
Research in the field of psychoneuroimmunology has shown that chronic stress may influence immune and inflammatory processes over time. Dhabhar (2014) discussed how prolonged stress can negatively affect immune regulation and resilience, particularly during periods of physical or emotional strain. NIH – Effects of Stress on Immune Function
Sleep is another major factor that commonly becomes disrupted during winter illness. Besedovsky et al. (2012) highlighted the important relationship between sleep and immune regulation, demonstrating that poor sleep quality and sleep deprivation may alter immune responses and recovery processes. NIH – Sleep and Immune Function
There is also growing scientific interest in the relationship between the nervous system and immune system, particularly how stress responses may affect inflammation, recovery, and overall wellbeing. Pavlov and Tracey (2012) explored the role of the nervous system in regulating inflammatory and immune responses through neuroimmune pathways. NIH – Neural Regulation of Immunity
When it comes to chiropractic and manual therapies specifically, the evidence is more mixed and still evolving. Some studies suggest spinal manipulation may produce short-term neurophysiological changes related to pain processing, muscle tension, autonomic nervous system responses, and mobility, although more high-quality research is still needed before stronger conclusions can be made. Côté et al. (2021) noted that spinal manipulative therapy may assist some people experiencing musculoskeletal pain conditions, particularly relating to neck pain, back pain, and tension-related presentations. BMJ Open – Spinal Manipulative Therapy Evidence Review
A small pilot study by Brennan et al. (1991) also explored changes in certain immune markers following spinal manipulation, including immunoglobulin levels and immune cell activity. However, the authors acknowledged that the findings were preliminary and should not be interpreted as evidence that chiropractic “boosts immunity” or treats infectious disease. PubMed – Spinal Manipulation and Immune Response Study
Clinically, what we more commonly observe during winter is people seeking support for the physical effects associated with being unwell, stressed, or run down, such as:
- Neck tension
- Headaches
- Rib pain from coughing
- Jaw tension
- Muscle tightness
- Fatigue
- Reduced mobility
- Poor sleep
Some patients report feeling more relaxed, less tense, more mobile, better able to move comfortably, and better supported physically during stressful periods after receiving care during the colder months.
At Chiropractic Care, our role is not to promise cures or unrealistic outcomes. Our goal is to support people through movement, physical care, lifestyle support, education, and collaborative healthcare approaches while helping them function at their best during winter.
Why Families Often Continue Care Through Winter
One thing we consistently notice is that families who maintain their routines through winter often feel they cope better overall.
Not because they never get sick.
But because they:
- Stay more proactive
- Monitor stress earlier
- Address tension sooner
- Prioritise rest and recovery
- Maintain mobility and movement
- Keep supporting their nervous system and general wellbeing
For many families, chiropractic care becomes part of their broader winter wellness strategy alongside good nutrition, sleep, hydration, medical care when required, movement, stress management, massage therapy, and naturopathic support.
At our Gregory Hills Centre, this collaborative approach is very important to us.
Supporting The Whole Family During Winter
One of the things we love most about family chiropractic care is supporting entire households.
During winter we often care for:
- Parents with tension headaches
- Babies struggling with congestion and unsettled sleep
- Kids recovering from coughs and colds
- Pregnant mums dealing with rib pain and fatigue
- Grandparents feeling stiff and sore
Our approach is always tailored to the individual.
For babies and children especially, techniques are incredibly gentle and age-appropriate.
We also work collaboratively with other health professionals when needed.
Practical Things We Recommend During Winter
Alongside chiropractic care, some of the most important winter health habits we discuss with patients include:
Prioritising Sleep – Recovery becomes much harder when sleep is disrupted.
Staying Hydrated – People often drink far less water in winter.
Gentle Movement – Even simple walking and stretching can help circulation, mobility, and breathing.
Breathing Well – Nasal breathing, rib mobility, posture, and diaphragmatic breathing matter more than most people realise.
Managing Stress – Stress profoundly affects how people feel physically.
Seeking Support Earlier – Many people wait until they are completely exhausted before asking for help.
Our Philosophy During Winter
At Chiropractic Care, our philosophy is simple:
We are here to support people, not judge them. Not shame them for being sick. Not make them feel guilty for needing help.
Winter is hard enough already.
If you are struggling with headaches, neck tension, rib pain from coughing, jaw tension, stress overload, postural strain, or even feeling run down, we would love to help support you however we can.
Sometimes people leave an adjustment during winter saying:
“I finally feel like I can breathe again.”
And honestly, that alone can make a huge difference when someone has been feeling miserable for days.
Final Thoughts
Cold and flu season affects far more than just the immune system.
It affects sleep, stress, breathing, mobility, muscle tension, mood, energy, family dynamics, and overall wellbeing
While chiropractic care is not a treatment or cure for viral illness, many people find it helpful as part of their broader approach to supporting their body during the winter months.
We are passionate about helping people move, breathe, adapt, and function at their best — especially during the seasons where life feels hardest.
And if you have been sitting at home wondering whether you should still come in because you’re feeling run down?
Please know:
If you are comfortable attending, we are generally very happy to support you.
