Why Pregnancy Can Cause Sciatic Pain — And Why So Many Women Feel Overwhelmed By It
Pregnancy can be one of the most transformative seasons in a woman’s life. While it can be exciting and beautiful, it also asks the body to continuously adapt to rapid physical, hormonal, and emotional changes along the way.
For many women, one of the most frustrating symptoms that develops during pregnancy is sciatic pain.
At our Gregory Hills Centre, sciatica is one of the most common reasons pregnant women seek chiropractic care.
And honestly?
Many women don’t just come in because they are in pain.
They come in because they are exhausted from trying to cope with it.
What Does Sciatica During Pregnancy Feel Like?
Sciatica during pregnancy can feel very different from woman to woman.
Some women describe:
- a dull ache through the buttock
- sharp pain into the leg
- burning sensations
- tingling
- heaviness
- tightness through the hips
- numbness
- pulling pain when walking
Others say:
“I can barely roll over in bed.”
“Standing for too long is unbearable.”
“Getting out of the car hurts.”
“I feel unstable when I walk.”
Sometimes symptoms come and go. Other times they gradually worsen as pregnancy progresses.
For many women, everyday tasks suddenly become difficult: walking, sleeping, driving, working, exercising, lifting another child, standing in the kitchen, and even getting dressed.
And emotionally, this can become incredibly draining.
What Actually Is Sciatica?
The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body.
It travels from the lower back, through the buttocks, and down the legs.
Sciatica refers to irritation or sensitivity involving this nerve or surrounding structures.
Importantly, not all pregnancy-related leg or buttock pain is true “sciatica,” even though many symptoms feel very similar.
Sometimes pregnancy-related changes involving the pelvis, lower back, glute muscles, hip muscles, joints, ligaments and posture may contribute to sciatic-type symptoms.
This is why a thorough assessment is important.
Why Can Pregnancy Trigger Sciatic Pain?
Pregnancy changes almost everything biomechanically.
As your baby grows:
- your centre of gravity shifts forward
- abdominal muscles stretch
- pelvic positioning changes
- spinal loading changes
- surrounding muscles compensate differently
At the same time, pregnancy hormones such as relaxin influence ligament and joint mobility to help the body prepare for birth.
While these changes are completely normal, they can sometimes create increased strain or tension around the lower back, pelvis, sacroiliac joints, hips and glute muscles.
In some women, this may contribute to irritation around the sciatic nerve or surrounding tissues.
Why Sciatica Often Feels Worse At Night
One of the most common things pregnant women tell us is:
“Night time is the worst.”
Rolling over in bed can become painful. Sleep positions become harder. Hips may ache after lying on one side too long. The pelvis and lower back can stiffen overnight. And when sleep quality decreases, pain often feels more intense the following day.
Poor sleep can also affect:
- stress levels
- emotional resilience
- recovery
- pain sensitivity
- energy levels
This is why pregnancy pain can sometimes become both physically and emotionally exhausting.
Pregnancy Is Not Just Physical
One thing I commonly observe as a pregnancy specific chiropractor is that many women are carrying far more than just physical tension.
Pregnancy can create enormous emotional and mental load.
Many women are simultaneously:
- working
- caring for other children
- managing households
- preparing for birth
- worrying about postpartum
- trying to “do everything properly”
And often, they are putting enormous pressure on themselves.
Some women quietly wonder:
- “Why am I struggling so much?”
- “Am I coping well enough?”
- “Why do I feel overwhelmed?”
- “Why do I feel emotional all the time?”
- “Will birth be okay?”
- “Will I be a good mum?”
These thoughts are far more common than most people realise. And stress itself can influence how the body feels physically.
When the nervous system feels overwhelmed, many women experience:
- increased muscle tension
- jaw clenching
- shallow breathing
- fatigue
- headaches
- increased pain sensitivity
The body and nervous system are deeply connected.
Feeling Heard Matters More Than Most People Realise
One of the most powerful things I’ve noticed over the years is that many pregnant women simply need someone to listen.
Not rush them.
Not dismiss them.
Not tell them to “just push through.”
But genuinely listen.
Sometimes women become emotional during appointments because someone finally asked:
“How are YOU coping?”
And truly meant it.
Pregnancy can feel incredibly vulnerable.
Many women feel pressure to enjoy every moment, to stay positive, keep functioning normally, and not complain.
But behind closed doors, some women feel:
- scared
- exhausted
- disconnected
- anxious
- unsupported
And being heard can be incredibly empowering.
How Chiropractic Care May Support Pregnancy
At Chiropractic Care, many pregnant women seek our help to support comfort, movement, mobility, and overall wellbeing throughout pregnancy.
Chiropractic care during pregnancy is gentle and tailored specifically to the individual and stage of pregnancy.
Depending on the person, care may involve assessing:
- pelvic movement
- spinal mobility
- posture
- muscular tension
- movement patterns
- lifestyle stressors
- daily activities
Care may include:
- gentle chiropractic techniques
- soft tissue therapy
- stretching advice
- rehabilitation exercises
- posture support
- movement guidance
- collaborative care with other healthcare providers where appropriate
Importantly, every pregnancy is different.
Our focus is not on “perfect alignment” or guaranteeing specific outcomes.
Instead, our goal is to support women through the enormous physical and emotional demands pregnancy can place on the body.
Small Daily Habits Can Sometimes Help
Depending on the individual, some women may find support through:
- gentle movement
- regular walking
- pregnancy-safe exercise
- changing positions frequently
- reducing prolonged sitting
- supportive pillows
- stress management
- breathing exercises
- pelvic support strategies
Listening to your body during pregnancy is incredibly important. Pain is not always something to simply ignore or “push through.”
You Are Not Weak For Struggling
This is something I wish more pregnant women understood.
Struggling with pain during pregnancy does not mean:
- you are weak
- your body is failing
- you are doing pregnancy wrong
Pregnancy places enormous demands on the body and nervous system.
And many women need support during that process. Sometimes physical support. Sometimes emotional support. And often both.
You Don’t Have To Navigate Pregnancy Alone
If you are experiencing sciatica or sciatic-type discomfort during pregnancy, know that you are not alone.
Many women experience similar challenges throughout pregnancy, particularly as their body adapts and changes.
At our Gregory Hills centre, we aim to provide gentle, supportive pregnancy chiropractic care that helps women feel more comfortable, more informed, more supported, and more empowered throughout pregnancy and beyond.
Because pregnancy care is about more than pain relief.
It is about helping women feel safe, heard, and supported during one of the biggest transitions of their lives.
So, if you are pregnant, tired of putting up with your sciatica, and are looking for practitioners that can help support you physically and emotionally, we are just a phone call away.
